New Zealand comprises two main islands (simply called the North and South Islands in English, or usually Te-Ika-a-Maui and Te Wai Pounamu in Maori) and a number of smaller islands. New Zealand offers an unlimited selection of quality tourist attractions and activities for a fun filled vacation while in New Zealand.
New Zealand is a country of rare beauty: glacial mountains, fast-flowing rivers, deep, clear lakes, hissing geysers and boiling mud. There are also abundant forest reserves, long, deserted beaches and a variety of fauna, such as the kiwi, endemic to its shores.
Located in the southern temperate zone, the climate ranges from subtropical in the north to temperate in the south. The ocean environment provides a mild climate with very few extremities. Prevailing weather patterns from the west tend to result in a wetter west coast and a dryer east, especially in the South Island where the Southern Alps act as a rain shadow for the eastern regions. Average annual temperature in Wellington ranges between 20C (68F) in January and 6C (42F)
If the open country is more your thing, New Zealand has plenty to offer: indigenous flora and fauna that bear witness to its geographical isolation, Great Barrier Island's pristine beaches and hot springs, the glaciers and snowfields of Mt Cook national park. The countryside lends itself to a range of activities, from hiking (colloquially, 'tramping') to sailing, kayaking, climbing and even whale watching. With strict development controls protecting its environment, New Zealand has a good ecological record.
