The busy little town of HATHERSAGE on the A625, five miles east of Castleton and just eleven from Sheffield, has a hard time persuading people not to pass straight through into the heart of the National Park. It's worth at least an hour though, particularly in its quieter reaches on the heights around the much restored village church of St Michael and All Angels , where a prominent grave site is said to be the last resting place of the Sherwood outlaw Little John. The footpath up to the church starts by the side of the Hathersage Inn on the main road. Hathersage's other claim to fame is as the "Morton" of Charlotte Brontė's Jane Eyre - a village name borrowed by the author from the landlord of the George in Hathersage, who met Charlotte off the stagecoach from Haworth when she came to stay here in 1845. She was visiting a friend, whose brother was the local vicar and, in the church, Charlotte doubtless was shown the memorial "Eyre brasses". She also used several other local names and buildings for her novel, notably North Lees Hall (Rochester's Thornfield Hall) and Moorseats (St John Rivers' Moor House) - all of which can be taken in on a four-mile circular walk around the town.
