Once a major stop on the old London-to-Bath stagecoach route, MARLBOROUGH , at the top end of the Vale of Pewsey, is a relatively tranquil spot now that the M4 deflects traffic to the north. It's a handsome town too: the wide High Street, a dignified assembly of Georgian buildings, has a fine Perpendicular church standing at each end and half-timbered cottages rambling up the alleyways behind. The famous public school is not especially old - it was established in 1843 - but incorporates an ancient coaching inn among its red-brick buildings. more
